9 to 5 The Musical!
This musical is based on the 1980 film of the same name. People of my great age will also remember the earlier T.V. series where the secretaries were worn down by the monotony of a 9-5 office existence ruled over by a totally unsympathetic and sexist male boss.
The musical premiered in Los Angeles in September 2008 and opened on Broadway in April2009 for a run of less than 12 months. It received 4 Tony Award nominations. This was followed by a national tour of the U.S. in 2010. The U.K. premiere opened in 2012 and featured Bonnie Langford in the role of Roz.
I was delighted to be asked to direct a musical which was so “hot off the press” as far as amateur groups are concerned. I have worked with Musical Director, Wayne Oakes, on a couple of previous occasions and knew we made a great team and I have been also been blessed with the services of Les Dagnall whose skill and knowledge of scenery and staging, together with his experience of working in this venue for many years, have considerably lightened the load of putting on such a complex musical in a relatively small setting. As anyone who knows me from previous productions elsewhere will be aware I do like a challenge!
There is a lot of talent within this company and they have risen to the challenges I have set them with a positive energy and enthusiasm. They have also made me feel very welcome amongst them. My thanks go to my two choreographers Claire and Sam, producer Michelle, the wardrobe team and anyone else who has been involved in this production.
So sit back and let us transport you in our time machine to the New York office world of Consolidated Industries in 1979. A world ruled over by sexist, lecherous, lying bigot Franklin Hart Junior who is just about to receive his come-uppance from those he despises most; a group of women. Enjoy the ride as Violet, Judy and Doralee defeat the machinations of Franklin Hart and in the process fulfil their true potential and “Shine Like the Sun”.
Have an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home.
