Tribute to Paul Davies

Picture
Paul passed away suddenly in June 2014 leaving a huge void in the society. His skills and knowledge of theatre, his technical ability with lighting and sound, his vision in set design showed the diverse talents of a very special man and were always taken for granted by the society because we knew that Paul would “sort it”.
Paul joined the society in September 1992 and immediately fell in love with stage, music and production. He had a special love for panto having telepathy with his partner, a fantastic sense of timing and humour, a sense of vision, add-libbing sometimes more than was required! He was methodical at learning lines and interacted brilliantly with the audience demonstrating immense stage presence. One of the skills he never mastered, however, was dancing – he would have been voted out in the first round of Strictly! However, Paul always said he loved sound and his vocal talents meant that he was able to swap between tenor, bass and even soprano as a dame!
Paul made his directing debut in 2012 with Free and Easy producing one of the best shows in recent years and, being part of that cast, we can speak personally of his ability to allow the actor to develop their character whilst still retaining his vision for the show. Paul showed great respect and consideration for people regardless of ability and brought out the best in everyone. The rehearsals were never a chore and never a dull moment!
As production co-ordinator Paul always ensured that we had a quality set design at the same time keeping within budget. Paul went above and beyond his duties with regard to set design and building, making friends with the local W.I to get his free lunch at the Tuesday lunch club! Because of his love for sound he would happily help other societies and groups at the Village Hall and everyone knew they could rely on him. Paul was an active member of the committee and in the past was Chair for many years.
Paul was without doubt an unsung hero going that extra mile in whatever was needed and his enthusiasm was infectious. Dearly missed by the whole company.
